Somtum (2008)
Somtum also released under the American title Muay Thai Giant, is a 2008 Thai martial arts film starring Nathan Jones as a tourist in Pattaya who is drugged, robbed and left penniless. Befriended by two young girls, one of whom is a muay Thai kickboxing champion, he is taken to their family restaurant where he is fed some spicy som tam. His adverse reaction leads to the destruction of the restaurant and he vows to raise the money to rebuild it.
Plot:
Good giant Barney Izumrud was robbed while resting in Pattaya. He made friends with two Thai sisters, one of whom speaks English, and the other is a Thai boxing champion, and lives with them until he returns his passport. Having tried something spicy “somtum” in his mother’s restaurant, he accidentally blew this place to dust. He vows to find a way to earn money to restore the restaurant. While visiting Thailand, a large Australian named Barney (Nathan Jones) gets his passport and money stolen.
Stuck in Thailand, unable to speak the language or defend himself from local thugs, he is taken in by two young girls, Dokya (Sasisa Jindamanee) and Katen (Nawarat Techarathanaprasert). They cook a spicy Somtum salad for him, which turns him into a big red monster. Barney promises to pay them back for all the damage he caused during his firey rage, and eventually the girls realize that his unusual reaction may help solve their problems.
